clean and conserve the dresses?

Posted by admin - August 8th, 2008

Step1:

After the wedding, many brides struggle with what to do with their precious wedding gowns that so fondly represents that special day. Since most brides prefer to treasure the memories of their wedding day by keeping their wedding dress (possibly handing it down to a daughter, special niece, god child or grand daughter, or even re-wearing it to renew their vows), it is important to understand the proper methods of cleaning and storing your gown so it can last for centuries to come. Should I have my gown cleaned if it looks clean? Whether you decide to keep your gown, donate it or sell it, it is important to consider having it cleaned and preserved as soon as possible to maintain its beauty and value. Caramelized sugar stains from cake icing, white wine, champagne or soft drinks will leave unsightly brown spots/stains if they are not thoroughly removed from the fabric in a timely manner. Perspiration, deodorant, hairspray, perfumes, body lotions and cosmetics can cause discoloration as well. Most of these are not readily visible to the naked eye can also cause damage to the fabric of the gown. Left untreated they can be difficult to impossible to remove over time. As a result, it is highly recommended that you have your gown cleaned and preserved by a reputable professional as soon as possible after your wedding.
Step 2:

What is the difference between dry cleaning and preservation? Dry cleaning provides a basic cleaning of obvious dirt and stains. However, it does NOT protect against the long term yellowing, fabric deterioration, or invisible stains that can surface over time and ruin your precious gown. It is important to find a highly reputable and experienced preservation service, such as the one offered by The Affordable Preservation Co., that will carefully examine each gown individually under special lighting and hand treat all stains with gentle yet effective chemicals. They should also treat the fabric with against yellowing and other discolorations with an anti-sugar treatment. Proper cleaning and preservation will permanently remove both visible and invisible stains, as well as protect the fabric from deterioration, so your gown will look just as beautiful as the day you first tried it on. Click on ‘Watch Video’ above to watch a video of the process used by the Wedding Gown Preservation Co.
Step 3:

Traditional Line ($129) ~ Celebrity Line ($179)
How much will it cost? Top quality preservation by a highly reputable company does not have to be expensive. Although some companies will charge upwards of $800 for museum quality preservation, you can get the same high quality for a lot less if you do your homework. The Affordable Preservation Co. has been an authorized dealer for The Wedding Gown Preservation Company (in business since 1913 specializing in wedding gowns) for over 5 years and offers a choice of 2 top quality packages starting at $129. Most dry cleaners will charge as much, if not more, for just basic dry cleaning alone.
Step 4:

How long can I wait to have my  wedding dresses cleaned and preserved? Since stains cause damage to a fabric over time, it is recommended that you have your dress professionally cleaned and preserved as soon after the wedding as is practical. Generally, you can safely wait up to six months after the ceremony. Some brides have waited longer, but it is not recommended as it may start to yellow, the fabric may begin to deteriorate and some stains may not come out at all as they settle into the fabric. Until you send in your gown to be cleaned and preserved, it is best to keep it in a dark (unexposed to sunlight), dry place, folded or rolled in a clean white sheet. Hanging your dress on a hanger is not recommended as it can cause stress to the fabric and create distortion. Do not store your gown in plastic such as a garment bag. Plastic can emit gases that will tend to yellow the fabric.

Step 5:

How should I store my gown after I have it preserved? Once your gown has been cleaned and preserved by a reputable professional it is also important that you continue to store your gown properly. Your gown should be stored in a room where the temperature and humidity levels are constant, such as a guest room or spare closet. Never store your dress in the attic or basement where there are extreme changes in temperature and/or humidity. The storage box should also lay flat if possible.

Wedding Gowns

Some brides know exactly which wedding gown they will wear on their wedding day, and have done since they were old enough to play dress-ups. For others, it’s a chaotic nightmare shuffling through wedding magazines and bridal boutiques, having no clue as to where to begin. Nonetheless, every bride romanticises about appearing perfectly beautiful on her special day.

Bridal fashion offers many alternate bridal gown styles, whether traditional or off beat. This provides the bride with the opportunity to focus on her particular preferences without feeling her choices are limited. Some bridal fashion advice indicates that the gown must be appropriate for the chosen wedding style. Personally, I have seen many weddings work where traditional bridal etiquette has been completely brushed aside.

My favourites include the big fluffy bridal gowns at an informal beachside gathering, a luxurious beaded satin slip with a delicately sheer cathedral length veil for a very formal church ceremony, and a heavily adorned crystal wedding gowns for a simple afternoon cocktail affair. What allowed these brides to carry it off so well was their ability to select a gown that suited them.

When the bridal dress suits your features so completely, you will look stunning no matter where or how your wedding takes place, and, your guests will think you are perfectly exquisite.

The most priceless snippet of advice? Be realistic and be confident. Have the confidence to accept who you are and what god gave you. Highlight your positive assets and accentuate those features - draw attention away from your less positive features. When something really gets you down, fix it! Obtain a professional assessment from an exclusive hair stylist, go to the gym and lose weight, start having your nails manicured, have your teeth whitened or go and treat yourself to a weekly body spa and / or facial for the next six months.

As the bride you have two questions that you needs to ask yourself. What sort of gown am I going to wear, and where will I get bridal dresses? Select approximately two or three bridal boutiques that carry a differing variety of styles and schedule an appointment. Remember, a gown always looks very different on a model or on the hanger! While you may not like the look of a particular gown, you can truly be amazed to realise that it completely transforms your entire appearance when you try it on. At this particular point, it is more relevant that you figure out which styles work and what to avoid. That won’t happen if you are afraid to try something on.

By the time you get home you will be dazzled, dazed and bewildered! Gems, jewels, beads, lace and tulle will be twirling around in your head making you giddy. Sometimes, for some brides, it can take a few days or even a few weeks for it all to settle. Eventually the mind will automatically sift through the information and you will wake up one day and just know where to go from here.

When you find a gown in a boutique and you fall in love with it, there is no need to consider looking elsewhere. You may find, however, that you like the bodice on one style and the skirt of another. Some bridal boutiques actually allow you to combine one or two styles and create an entirely new gown. Simply advise of the styles that you like and ask whether you are able to do so.

Alternately, whilst many bridal boutiques simply sell gowns from a range of different designers, some boutiques actually own their styles and design all of their own gowns. This option is very helpful for the bride who just can not find anything they really adore. The professional bridal designer will sit and discuss what you like and what you are really after. They will offer you assistance with selecting colours, fabrics and so forth and it will allow you to piece together those little things that you have been looking for which just don’t seem to be available.

Some brides find the wedding dress of their dreams and just won’t settle for anything else, until they see the price tag! When you have your heart set on a particular style that you just can not afford, an experienced (bridal dress) dressmaker can create a similar style for almost half the price.

Finally, there is the occasional bride that loves anything that glistens and glimmers, and feels that most wedding dresses they have seen just don’t have the sparkle that they are after. You can actually visit a local bead supplier who offers a wonderful variety of Swarovski crystals in all sizes and colours. Because the crystals are stored in large jars and are priced per gram, you can purchase any given quantity at the most reasonable price. This is where bridal designers purchase their crystals and beads. You can provide your boutique or designer with a sample of your preferred crystals and they will create the effect you are after. Beading does tend to incur extra cost because they are sewn individually, by hand.

Wedding Gowns Length

Posted by admin - July 29th, 2008

Sweep
This is the shortest train available, extending one foot beyond the base of the gown. In fact, this does not really look too much like a train at all, as the hem spills just a little over floor length. This is very elegant and very slimming.

Chapel length wedding dress
This is the first of the wedding gowns to have a full train. Generally, the length will not extend beyond 1.5 metres in length from the floor. Whilst you will need assistance with setting the train out when you arrive the church, and during photos, you do not require assistance when walking down the isle.

Cathedral length wedding dress
This wedding gown train is no more than 2 metres in length. Again, you will only require assistance when arriving at the church and setting up for photographs. Walking will not be difficult as the fabric will simply follow. Only when the bridal gown has a very heavily adorned train will you require assistance as you walk.

Royal
This is the Princess Diana train, being quite long. Generally, this train sits no more than 2.5 metres in length, however, royal weddings will have trains far exceeding these measurements.

Securing the Train
Given that many trains are just not going to be practical once the ceremony and photographs are over, the gown will need to be lifted. This is generally done by setting up little ties at the back of the bridal dress which secures the train – giving the old fashioned bustle effect. This is very effective, and most attractive. The gown, when the train is secured properly, will be the shape of a bell.

Your wedding day will be one of the most memorable days of your life. Work on creating your own style for your wedding, it doesn’t have to cost you a fortune to do this. Spend some quite time alone, and picture what you would like your wedding to be. Talk to your husband to be, to get his input and go about creating the picture that is in your mind.
